Howling Fjord
This is one of the two starting areas in Northrend. As you may gather from the name, this area mainly consists of huge cliff faces with a wide river running through. The landscape features coastal areas, snowy mountains, rivers and forests, with villages and towns built on and around the cliffs.Towns
The two main towns in Howling Fjord are the Alliance town of Valguarde, and the Horde town of Vengeance Landing.Vengeance Landing is a Forsaken base, where Queen Sylvanas plans to unleash a plague on the Lich King, in the hope of fighting the scourge. This town is unique, because it is the first town that is purely Forsaken architecture. All Forsaken buildings up to this point have been converted from Scourge or Human styles. Here, Blizzard are advancing the Forsaken's storyline, as they have a vested interest in going up against Arthas to maintain their free will.
Other towns in this zone include Kamagua, a Tuskarr town on the Isle of Spears, which players reach by taking a trip down on a gondola on ropes, and many enemy settlements owned by the Vrykul, such as Skorn, Baleheim and Nifflevar.
Inhabitants
The Howling Fjord is home to the 13 foot tall Viking-like Vrykul. The evil Vrykul, who are allied with the Lich King, originally come from Ulgaar. It was thought that the Vrykul had long since vanished from the Howling Fjord, but the activity at the settlements of Valguarde and Vengeance Landing seems to have brought them back. It is unknown where they had vanished to for the past several thousand years, but it is clear they do not plan on sharing their territory with either the Horde or the Alliance. There is also another race here, distant relatives to the Dwarves, who may provide never before known information about the Dwarven heritage. These hostile Iron Dwarves have strange runes etched into their skin, and are able to use the power of lightning, adding yet more mystery to their existence. Players see more of these Dwarves in Grizzly Hills, where they inhabit a town very similar to Ironforge called Thor Modan.
Utgarde Keep
The Vrykul seem to come from the fortress of Utgarde Keep. Utgarde Keep is close by to the Alliance settlement of Valguarde, and is the dungeon in the Howling Fjord. There will be 3 instances inside Utgarde, a 5-man instance for level 70+ players named Utgarde Catacombs, a 5-man level 80+ dungeon named Utgarde Pinnacle and a Raid instance.
