What is Enchanting?

Introduction

Enchanting is the ability to permanently augment armour and weapons with magical enhancements. Ususally, Enchanters do not create the original item, they need to have an item first to enchant. They need to Disenchant magical items in order to gather the necessary reagents to use when enchanting other items. They can also create oils which when applied to a weapon will imbue with temporary benefits that can stack with permanent enchantments, as well as some magic wands, such as the [Lesser Magic Wand].

As the magical item is destroyed in the process of disenchanting this is the hungriest of Professions as far as resources are concerned, especially when you take into account you can not sell the dusts, essences or shards you get from items to vendors. You can sell them to other players however, and you can actually make quite good money on that without ever enchanting or crafting anything else at all.

Type of Profession

  • Enchanting is a Primary Service Profession and therefore counts towards your 2 primary profession limit.
  • Enchanting is counted as a crafting profession, but it is unusual in that you may gather the materials it needs by using the Disenchant facility that comes with Enchanting.
  • Enchanting only requires the materials gathered from Disenchanting items that are of an Uncommon or better quality. Therefore, you are free to pick whatever second profession you will. Tailoring is a good combo with enchanting, as neither profession require materials to be "gathered" in the conventional sense, like metal Ore, or Herbs, but you can also pick a gathering profession like Mining or Herbalism as the secondary choice to earn some extra cash on the AH.

What are the Enchanting Specialisations?

There are no specialisations in Enchanting.

How do I Unlearn Enchanting?

Unlearn this profession
You can unlearn professions for free any number of times. Go to your skills panel (press K). Click on the Profession you wish to unlearn and a small icon will appear next to it and clicking on this will unlearn the skill. Be aware you will lose all associated recipes and support skills too and if you wish you hadn't unlearnt it (eek!) you will have to start your training at Apprentice level and work you way up again. Click the image on the right for a fully captioned shot. Use this feature with caution, Blizzard will not undo a mistake of this nature.

Crafting

How Do I Get Supplies?

Enchanters need Dusts, Essences, Shards and Crystals (reagents) gained by Disenchanting magical items (green, blue or purple items). Obviously the better the item the better grade of dusts, essences and shards you will receive.

  • Uncommon Quality
  • Rare Quality
    • Example: [Reavers' Ring]
    • Has a chance to give Essences (often), Shards (guaranteed) or Crystals (rarely).
  • Epic Quality

How to Disenchant?

To disenchant you simply click the Disenchant icon which will make your cursor glow and then click on the item you wish to destroy in order for use as Enchanting reagents. You can be anywhere to disenchant. Once the item has disenchanted a loot box will appear with the reagents, and you can not undo it. Whether you click on the loot to move it to your bag or not is irrelevant, simply closing the loot box will automatically move the reagents to your bag and the original item will disappear. Be absolutely sure you don't wish to sell or use the item before you disenchant. You can disenchant other people's items as long as they are not soulbound.

Epic (Purple) items that are level 51 to 60 disenchant into a [Nexus Crystal], Epic items above level 60 disenchant into a [Void Crystal]. Also, Rare (Blue) items that normally disenchant into Shards have a very small chance of disenchanting into a [Nexus Crystal] (level 51-60) or a [Void Crystal] (level 61-70).

Note about Lesser & Greater
You can see that there are 'lesser' and 'greater' variations of essences and in all cases three lesser essences of one type can be combined to make a single greater essence of that type. Simply right click on the stack of lesser essences to automatically turn three to one greater or right click on the greater essence to change it to three lesser of that type. You can do this repeatedly, combining or dividing isn't permanent.

To perform some enchantments, you will require other reagents which are not gained from disenchanting items. A list of every item needed for all enchants can be found here.

Your skill level determines whether you can disenchant an item, as shown in the table on the right. However, items from The Burning Crusade (level 58+) require a minimum of 225 skill to disenchant, and there are occasional exceptions to the rules.

Not all Green, Blue or Purple items can be disenchanted. This includes Quest Items, Ammo, Bind-on-Pickup items bought from a vendor and the wands that Enchanters can make. Also, any item that cannot be equipped cannot be disenchanted.

Gaining Gold From Enchanting Materials

Disenchanting can be a profitable profession in itself. Bind-on Pickup items that a player acquires can be sold to a vendor, but when disenchanted, may yield a valuable shard which can be worth a lot more that simply selling the item. The same can be said for some green items, if a player is certain that the item cannot be sold on the Auction House due to poor stats etc, the materials gathered from disenchanting it most certainly will, but obviously, this depends on the server, and if the materials are in demand!

A good tip if you have enchanting is to talk with your group when you are going to an instance about letting you roll "Need" on all blue or better soulbound drops that none actually needs, and then the whole party make a manual "/roll 1-100" about who should get the shard, to be sold at AH (or used in an enchant). This is often more profitable or useful for everyone in the party, and a good way to make use of soulbound items none needs.

Non-Enchanting Materials

To perform some enchantments you will require other reagents which are not gained from disenchanting items and these are listed below together with how you can get them.

How Do I Make or Enchant Items?

Once trained, you will find two icons in your Skills & Abilities book (Hotkey P) as seen on the left. Drag these down to your action bar for easy access. One disenchants a magical item and produces reagents (dusts, essences or shards) and the other icon you use when you are enchanting items using those dusts or essences (amongst other reagents).

When you train as an Apprentice Enchanter you will be given a few basic formulae (recipes) to set you on your way but you'll need to pay for higher level ones as you progress. Your first port of call are the Enchanting Trainers (listed above). They will have a selection for sale and the better the trainer i.e. Expert, Artisan, the better the formulae on sale. Lower level ones can be bought from Enchanting Suppliers too. You can also find more rare ones from drops or trade for them with other players, keeping an eye on the Auction House. Don't buy white (common) quality recipies from the AH though, as the white colour means you can buy it from a vendor for 1/10 that price. Just search for that recipe in WoWDigger.com, find out which NPC sells it, and go get it yourself.

Make sure you have the apropriate Rod (see below), select the formula you wish to use and hit 'Enchant'. Your cursor will glow. Click the item you wish to enchant, a short spell cast will start and when it is finished, and that's it. You can enchant an item in any of your bags or that you are wearing, or other player's items in the trade window slot for enchanting. In this fashion you can easily enchant other player's soulbound items, which would be impossible otherwise. You can also demand payment for such enchants in the same trade window, even if it's more common to let the customer provide the materials and payment first instead.

Rods

Unlike Blacksmithing that needs a forge, Enchanters do not need to be anywhere in particular to enchant. You will need a rod of a certain quality, and the higher level enchant you wish to make, the higher quality rod is needed. See the table below for more information. What quality rod is required will be detailed in the enchanting formula you wish to use, but you don't have to equip it, just have it in one of your bags. A good thing is that you only ever need to have one rod, as one with higher quality automatically counts as a rod of all the lower qualities as well.

In order to get a proper Rune Rod, you need to ask a Blacksmith player for the actual metal rod, and then rune it yourself. Rods are the only tool Enchanters will require. Rods don't disappear after performing an enchantment as they're tools not reagents. When you upgrade your rod to one required for higher level enchanting, the old one is consumed, but as the new rod will count as both your old and your new simultaneously, that isn't a problem. Here are the different types of rods used by enchanters:

What Items Can I Create?

Enchanting adds magical power to items such as weapons and armor, and can also be used to create things like [Lesser Magic Wand] and [Wizard Oil].

  • Visit WoWDigger for a full list of all enchantments available.

What Can I Make That Other Professions Need?

Recap

  • Enchanting is a Primary Crafting Profession, and will use one of your two Primary Profession slots
  • Enchanting primarily adds bonuses to armor and weapons, as well as creating a few magic items that can be used to temporarily boost some stats, eg [Lesser Mana Oil], and also some wands.
  • You need to be lvl 5 to learn Apprentice Enchanting, and have 10 copper
  • Every time you want to upgrade your Enchanting rank, it will cost more money
  • Every skill you acquire through a Trainer costs money
  • There are grades in when you come to make an item. The colours are:
    • Grey - Trivial, can be bought from a vendor. White nametag.
    • Green - Uncommon, can't be bought from a vendor, but still common. Green nametag.
    • Yellow - Rare, can't be bought from vendor, can be very rare. Blue nametag.
    • Orange - Epic, very rare patterns. Purple nametag.

  • Enchants of the same type on different items stack. For example, if you apply a +4 all stats to a ring (Enchant Ring - Stats) and a +4 to all stats to bracers (Enchant Bracer - Stats) piece you'll have a combination of +8 to all stats.
  • You gain skill by enchanting or creating items. Only enchants with Green, Yellow or Orange nametags will yield skill.
