All Azerothian dragons are part of a Dragon Flight belonging to one of the Five Great Aspects - Alexstrasza, Malygos, Neltharion (a.k.a. Deathwing), Nozdormu and Ysera. Dragons first ruled Azeroth a long time before Night Elf civilization started to arise some 10,000 years ago. Dragons joined with Night Elves to purge Azeroth of the invading Burning Legion, after which Neltharion became known as Deathwing and caused a civil war between his own, Black Dragon Flight and the other's.

All dragons are born to one of the Dragon Flights, which shows which shows on their colour. It also shows what natural aspect they retain:

• Red - Life, Fire - Alexstrasza
• Blue - Magic, Ice - Malygos
• Black - Destruction (was Warding), Fire - Neltharion/Deathwing
• Bronze - Time, Sand - Nozdormu
• Green - Dreaming, Nature - Ysera

Lately, the black dragon Nefarian has used blood from all the Dragon Flights in attempts to create the Chromatic Dragon Flight in his laboratories of Blackrock Spire, which has traits from all the dragons, and are extremely resilient. In Outland, there is also a new Dragon Flight called the Netherdrakes, believed to be Black dragons exposed to pure Nether, and transformed. They have, however, managed to rid themselves of any taint from Deathwing's madness, and are more interested in their own survival.
