The armor produced by Leatherworking is mainly of use to classes that wear leather and mail, such as the the Rogue, Hunter, Druid and Shaman. At higher levels, players can specialise in the Leatherworking profession, allowing them to create better quality items. There are three specialisations, and they are:
A wonderful companion skill for your Leatherworking would be Skinning and to read more about that, click here.
Also, if you're not part of a large guild that can provide you with mats (i.e. skins), it might be best for you to pick up the Skinning skill as well. Skinning is one of the the easiest skills in the game. There's no need for a "Find" feature on your mini-map for skinning, mobs are plentiful and you can do it anywhere at anytime. Skinning will provide Leather

Training Costs
If you have at least a Honored standing with the faction that the trainer belongs to, you will only pay 90% of these prices.
Of course its always nice to know how much things are if you are honored in one city and only friendly in another....let me tell you, its cheaper, so go to those places if you want to save a silver or two.
What Are the Leatherworking Specialisations?
There are three different specialisations in Leatherworking:
Tribal Leatherworking
Tribal Leatherworking is all leather, all the way and a great way to go if you are a Druid or Shaman as its full of Spirit and Intellect.
A list of all the Tribal Leatherworking Patterns.
Dragonscale Leatherworking
Dragonscale calls out to the high level Shamans and their friends as you move from making leather armor into mail armor.
A list of all the Dragonscale Leatherworking Patterns.
Elemental Leatherworking
Elemental has all of the good Agility and Stamina that a Rogue craves and a low level Hunter would appreciate.

How Do I Train in One of These Specialisations?
You need to complete quests to obtain the training for your chosen specialisation:
Horde
The quest for Dragonscale begins at Thorkaf Dragoneye. He can be found in the Badlands. What he needs from you is two (2) [Tough Scorpid Breastplate]s, two (2) [Tough Scorpid Gloves] and ten (10) [Worn Dragonscale]s.
For all you caster out there, the quest for Elemental comes from Brumn Winterhoof. He stands on a small hill just west of Boulder'gor, Arathi Highlands. What he wants from you is two (2) [Heart of Fire], two (2) [Globe of Water], two (2) [Core of Earth] and two (2) [Breath of Wind].
Last, but not least is Tribal. Se'Jib in Stranglethorn Vale will help you through this part if you give him what he wants, which is one (1) [Wild Leather Vest] and one (1) [Wild Leather Helmet].
Alliance
Sarah Tanner, level 50 and a Master Elemental Leatherworker. She can teach you Elemental Leatherworking and can be found at Tanner Camp, in Searing Gorge. When you speak to her she will be sure to send you to Narain Soothfancy, just outside Steamwheedle Port, in Tanaris. Once at Narain, you will be ushered over to a book on the table. This is where you choose Elemental. After you have made your choice you will bring two (2) [Heart of Fire], two (2) [Globe of Water], two (2) [Core of Earth] and two (2) Unknown creature: Breath of Wind to Sarah in the Searing Gorge.
Peter Galen is a level 50 Master Dragonscale Leatherworker. He is found in a little camp just east of The Forlorn Ridge, Azshara. He will also tell you to first seek out Narain Soothfancy, so it is best to do this before making the long trip in to Azshara. After you have chosen Dragonscale, what Peter needs from you is two (2) [Unknown Item: Tough Scorpid Breasplate]s, two (2) [Tough Scorpid Gloves] and ten (10) [Worn Dragonscale]s.
Caryssia Moonhunter is a level 50 Master Tribal Leatherworker. She can be found in The Lower Wilds, at the Alliance camp on the the border of Feralas and Thousand Needles. It is not certain that she will tell you to seek out Narain Soothfancy first, but I'm assuming she will being as you have to do it for Elemental and Dragonscale. Either way, the items she will need from you in order to complete your training are one (1) [Wild Leather Vest] and one (1) [Wild Leather Helmet].
How Do I Change Leatherworking or Unlearn It?
You can unlearn professions for free any number of times. Go to your skills panel (press K). Click on the Profession you wish to unlearn and a small icon will appear next to it and clicking on this will unlearn the skill. Be aware you will lose all associated recipes and support skills too and if you wish you hadn't unlearnt it (eek!) you will have to start your training at Apprentice level and work you way up again. Click the image on the right for a fully captioned shot. Use this feature with caution, Blizzard will not undo a mistake of this nature.Changing Specialisation
From patch 2.1.3, it became possible to change your Leatherworking specialisation without re-doing the specialisation quest or losing any talent points.
Once you have decided to you wish to change to a different specialisation, return to the original quest giver for your Leatherworking specialisation and pay the fee, the amount varies depending on your level, to remove your specialization. This will result in the loss of any known patterns that required the specialisation. Once this is done, you can then learn your new specialization by reading a book obtained from Narain Soothfancy. He is found in Tanaris, north of Steamweedle Port. The book is on his table, and it will teach you either the Dragonscale, Elemental or Tribal specialisation.
Crafting
How Do I Get Supplies?
As the name suggests, Leatherworking mainly requires leather! Therefore, the profession Skinning should provide you with the majority of your needed materials. However, as well as leather, other resources are also needed. There are ways you can obtain these materials, although it is usually cheap and convenient to gather them yourself. If you're in a hurry though, you may consider using the following methods to obtain the extra resources:
- Some components are looted from monsters.
- Materials can be traded with/bought from players with other trade professions.
- Most of the things you might need from other players can usually be bought at your local Auction House, at a vendor or perhaps from your guild.
List of all Leatherworking Suppliers.
How Do I Make Items?
Once you have learnt your first (Apprentice) level of Leatherworking, you will find the icon on the right in your Skills & Abilities book (hotkey P) which when clicked on will open your Leatherworking pattern book. To become the ultimate Leatherworker you will need to obtain patterns from a Trainer, find them from quests, killing monsters or trading them with other players.
Depending on what colour a pattern shows as in your book, they will be one of four different colours which indicate the likelihood of gaining skill when creating it:
- Grey = You will not receive a skill point when creating.
- Green = You will rarely gain a skill point when creating.
- Yellow = You will probably gain a skill point when creating.
- Orange = You will always gain a skill point in when creating.
- Red = You do not have high enough skill level learn this pattern.
The Leatherworking pattern book also displays what items your current ingredients can be used for and for how many of each you can make. If you select an item, the book will tell you exactly what reagents are needed to create it.
If any of the reagents icons are greyed out it's because you do not have any of them. If you have all the reagents simply click "create" and it will automatically create the item and move it to your backpack.
What Items Can I Create?
As with all Professions, there are many things you can create with Leatherworking. Leatherworking patterns teach Leatherworkers how to create armor, armor kits, drums, and bags which can be either used by yourself, or sold at the Auction House or traded with other players. Patterns may be given as quest rewards, purchased from vendors, or found as loot.
