World of Warcraft's New Feature: Achievements!
Blizzard have made a new page about the new feature that will go live in Wrath of the Lich King: Achievements!

| While Wrath of the Lich King will improve many of World of Warcraft’s existing features, it will also introduce plenty of brand-new ones to keep the game fresh and interesting. One of these new features is sure to suit a wide range of play styles: achievements. These self-contained goals will offer new challenges, satisfy goal-oriented players, allow others to see your accomplishments in World of Warcraft -- and are just plain fun. World of Warcraft’s achievements system will launch with more than 500 individual achievements covering every aspect of gameplay, including world exploration, PvE, PvP, professions, and character development; from the purely whimsical to the truly epic, there will be something for everyone. Some achievements come with in-game rewards such as tabards, vanity pets, and titles. All of these rewards are purely cosmetic and just for fun, but you’ll certainly stand out when you proudly display them. And don’t fret about running out of achievements anytime soon. The list is easily expandable, so you can expect additional achievements with each new World of Warcraft content update. The Achievements Window Upon starting your journey in Wrath of the Lich King, you’ll see a new button on your main action bar. Click that button to bring up the achievements window. The top of the window displays the total number of points you’ve received for completing achievements. Below, each achievement appears with its name, description, point value, the completion date, and a progress bar (if applicable). Some achievements expand to display a list of individual components, highlighted to show which parts you’ve finished. You can also designate which achievements to track as you play, similar to the existing quest tracker. An important design goal is to provide players with everything they need to know to unlock an achievement. It’s great to be able to see your own achievements -- but it’s even better to let the world know what you’ve accomplished. By right-clicking other players and selecting the appropriate option, you can compare your achievements to theirs. Every time you earn a new achievement, your accomplishment is announced to your guild and everyone in your immediate vicinity -- and the custom achievement animation and sound effect are unmistakable. Also, your achievements will be viewable on the Armory, allowing you to track and show off your accomplishments via the web. Types and Categories of Achievements World of Warcraft’s achievements come in several varieties. Some simply require specific actions to unlock, such as getting a haircut or defeating a member of each race in your opposing faction in PvP. Others involve a progress bar and require you to do something several times -- such as give out 10 hugs. Some achievements are progressive; for example, once you complete an achievement to collect 10 vanity pets, you might next be asked to collect 25. Finally, meta achievements unlock when you complete other achievements -- unlocking all World Exploration achievements (see below) unlocks a World Explorer meta achievement. Some achievements, including those that involve quests, honorable kills, items currently in your possession, skills (including professions), exploration, and reputations, will be applied to your character retroactively. To help keep track of all the different achievements you can unlock, you’ll find the following categories in the achievements window:
Feats of Strength Feats of Strength represent the past glories of Azeroth, and as such, players will find them very difficult -- if not impossible -- to earn. They’re worth no points, and unlike normal achievements, unearned Feats are not displayed in the achievements interface. Feats include old-world player-vs.-player ranks, obtaining rare mounts, special titles, and more. Feats of Strength will be awarded retroactively (that is, they’ll be immediately granted to your character if you qualify) since many of them will be impossible to earn in Wrath of the Lich King. |

Am I getting the feeling that its ultimatley just fluff? hundreds of new titles and vanity items may interest some but I think the real reason is easily addable objectives.

NOw the important question is....are any of these retroactive?
One thing I was impressed with City of Heroes was when they implemented the Achievements, many were retroactive and you just logged on and recieved more than a dozen. I can understand some not being (like the 50 enemy kills in a Capitol) but others should be so. Otherwise it will be frustrating to "earn" something that you should have already recieved.

Check the last lines: "Feats of Strength will be awarded retroactively (that is, they’ll be immediately granted to your character if you qualify) since many of them will be impossible to earn in Wrath of the Lich King."
So yes, it will be retroactively. ;)

Yes, rewards for things no longer available like the old PvP titles are excellent imo. It rewards long-time players, something Blizzard rarely do because they like to focus on people who are new to the game.

Oh dont worry, when people start crying they cant achieve them blizzard will come up with some method for them to be obtainable again. Theirs one achievement which is get every single 1,0000,000-1 drop chance mount.

Lame. This along with the haircuts are just copies of what you can do in LOTRO. Except, LOTRO achievements are actually worth pursuing for more than just a title. How about some player/guild housing then Bliiz?

If you think LOTRO introduced this, or even innovated it, you're not even close. Though why WoW has taken so long to implement something like this, I don't understand.
Who here wouldn't want to see much greater character customization ala CoH?

Looks like not all of the achievements are well thought out. Just as an example:
• Hot Streak: Win 10 ranked arena matches in a row.
Yah, let's encourage good players to start new teams at low rating to get easily win streaks.
Hopefully, I'm wrong and this thing doesn't backfire on them. o.o

im just wondering what the rewards will be... and what the feats of strength will all be... i never got any of the rare drop mounts but i do have my old sergeant title so there is that... but yeah im wondering how many of these will be retroactive outside of the feats... like if ive already killed one of every race of the horde will the game know that i have already and automatically give that one to me as soon as i start up wotlk or will have to do it all over again?...

What an absolutely horrible idea. Achievements in a multiplayer game just encourage griefing and ruining everyone else's enjoyment. Achievement whores just run around trying to rack up achievements and everyone else who is supposed to be working towards the same goal can just go to hell. It turned me off of Xbox 360 Live and it turned me off Team Fortress 2 when Valve did it.

You can thank Activision for it and it's no real shock honestly. All Act does is recycle their "ideas" over and over, just in different games. Sure, Achievements were present in other MMO's, but since when did Blizz start "joining the crowd"? For the most part, their content was well thought out and at least halfway original. Now they're just copying others to "stay in the game".
I won't be shocked if that April Fool's joke of Guitar Hero becomes a reality at this rate. Hell, don't be shocked if they suggest WoW female models be re-rendered to be sex icons like they did GH3, which turned me off of that as well.
I said it before, I'll say it again: Way to sell out Blizz. Sadly, it'll still pay off in the end, but they're going to lose a lot of respect along the way for it being a cheap copy-cat method to keep players in what is becoming a rapidly boring and repetitive game.

Actually, that's been one of Blizzard's hallmarks thus far. Look at what the competition has done, copy it, try to perfect it and if that's not possible, than at least polish and buff the living daylights out of it, so it looks all sparkly and new when compared to its original version.

I see this as a nice collection basket fro what used to be a spread out thing of:
- old pvp titles
- new titles like "hand of adal"
- vanity pets
- ...
Instead of (or better, in addition to) having all these different ways to show your achievements you now have one spot to collect them in.
Example:
People who do the SSC/TK attunements get a special title now, which they can activate. But when a new, sparklier title comes along they have to choose. If they switch nobody will see they went through the quest at all. With achievements this is fixed.

While I liked this feature in LOTRO, I just don't like it in WoW.
WOTLK seems like they will just slam all these new features in the game.
The more I read about WOTLK, the more I miss original WoW.

- It hasn't even been implemented in WoW yet, so how can you say you don't like it?
- LOTRO had the feature when the game started I believe, and hence, there was nothing to adjust to. Of course it will have an impact on WoW in some way, because it's a new thing a lot of people will be excited about. And Blizzard can't exactly bring it in slowly, you either have an achievements system or you don't.
- As to all WotLK's other new features such as aerial combat, passenger mounts, barber shops and a new Hero class, many people are looking forwards to them because they are an improvement to the game, they will make it more customisable, more fun and offer more options. I think wishing back to the days of vanilla WoW is like saying you wish it was 20 years ago - things were different and possibly less complicated, but you'd soon miss things from today like your mobile phone, internet, 24 hour TV and retail facilities.
Furthermore, I'd like to add that when Achievements was a proposed feature for WAR, the fans went nuts about it. Why is it that when Blizzard bring it in, most people slam the idea as naff? And if it's because the idea isn't original; There are many things about Conan and WAR that were clearly inspired by WoW and other MMOs, yet hardly anyone seems to be bothered by that.

But things we so much better in the 50's - I mean, we had rampant racism.
And the 40's.... I mean wow...back then they knew what a real war was.

So basically what you're saying is everything in WAR is a copy from WoW now? As I recall, and correct me if I'm wrong, but a lot of "ideas" that are being brought into WotLK were first announced for WAR, prime example being destructable environment and seige weapons. Also, WAR has an entire different focus point, which is PvP. I suppose that is also a "rip off" from WoW's pathetic excuse for PvP? Please.
I have no issues with being "inspired" by other games, but blatantly copying announced features from future competition in order to try and keep up makes that a cop out, pure and simple.

Small correction, Blizzard was already talking about Siege weapons when WoW itself was still in Beta. How it was something that they couldn't include in the game right away, but how it was something on their to-do list (same applies to hero classes).
That rather makes destroyable buildings a given, because there isn't much use for siege weapons, if they can't destroy things.
