A Happy Warcraft Tale

10th Jul 2008 02:20 PM GMT | Maticus | 26 comments

There is a story on latimes.com this week about a married couple who play WoW, but here's the clincher - For once the story isn't about them being bad parents, society drop-outs or some sort of deviants, it is in fact a tale of two people who met, married and enjoy playing WoW together, with positive results!

Brad and Cynthia Murdock spend time together while playing, chatting about their day, and even say the game has brought them closer together (Cynthia only started playing when TBC was launched), and has saved them a ton of money as they now stay in more often.

Founding member of Blizzard, Frank Pearce, speaks up about why he thinks more and more couples are enjoying the game together:

There's a huge social element to the game. We've had this huge massive community grow out of the experience..

The community is really a big factor that draws people into the game and keeps them in the game as well..

It's a social experience; it's not just an entertainment experience

Further down in the article however, is a more typical WoW story. It's about a young married man who plays WoW after his wife has gone to bed and doesn't like to go out of the house much other than to work. He even made his wife wait to go to the hospital when she was in labour, so that he could finish a raid. I suppose a 100% positive story would be too much to hope for ;)

Aww... that's a nice story.

I completely agree. When my boyfriend and I play together it's like a night in. We get snacks, get settled in together, and enjoy the time spent with each other. When we regularly played it together it did save us money..and was something fun and enjoyable we could do together.

There's always the good and bad!

What a nice way to start the day- a story about Brad and Cynthia Murloc!

Awwww nice to hear nice stories like that, funny how their last name is close to Murlock.

And shame on that man for making his wife wait for him to finish a raid, while she was in labour.

"He even made his wife wait to go to the hospital when she was in labour, so that he could finish a raid."

I predict a divorce in less than 5 years. Anyone so selfish who would make their wife wait, while in labor, for him to finish a raid, has serious priority issues. Thats all fine when no children are invovled. But lets see how it works when the baby is crying at 2AM in the morning and he won't get the baby cause "I'm Raiding, Honey"

I love reading stories like this one. My husband & I also play WoW together. We have our computers set up in the living room and my son also plays with us. We all belong to the same guild. We stay home more often and enjoy the family time we have much more now. It brought us closer as a family.

Nail. Hammer. jschild. WIN!

It's so true. If the BIRTH of you child comes after WoW, then how can you expect that you'll put any of your child's needs before WoW. This sounds like the story is taken way out of proportion, or contraception methods aren't being utilized enough among WoW players. "Ooh this one has +35 spell penetration!"

I hope that the man changed, otherwise that will be one unhappy household.

Tikki your avatar!! ROFL!

See, why can't we hear more about this kind of thing in the media? They just like reporting on the bad news

Is there such thing as good news in the media?
Because bad news sells. Take America for example. Murders have been declining for nearly 30 years here in the US. But even though the murder rate has fallen, it is reported on the news 600% more than it was around 1980.

Youth violence at its lowest point, but what do we hear about? How games makes kids more violent, something that all data points away from.

Couple years ago the media freaked over shark attacks. We had 1 less shark attack that year than average.

The media's only focus today (versus 20 years ago) is to make money. No other concern is really focused on in any serious matter. It's why so many people turn to blogs (even though they are almost always more biased and many are filled with outright lies) is that they are far more likely to focus on real stories.

why are you even reading this ? it is the niveau of the sun, or whatever your local boulevard magazin is called.

news should be abobut politics, maybe sports, and not much else. Get your own life instead of obsessing about the life of others.

ps : tikki, love your avatar :D

Good news is an awful seller because a lot of people don't want to know how great someone else's life is. People would rather relish is other's misery because it doesn't show them what they want, what they can't have, or how horrible their life is!

PS: Thanks Twoflower and Maticus! I shall name him, Herman! :)

HARDCORE RAIDING RUINS LIVES! WORST PART OF THE GAME!
Loot drama, wipes, long hours. HORRIBLE for the well-being of any socially healthy human beings.

Of course the same could not be said of gambling, drinking, smoking, PvP, watching the grass grow or whatever you fancy. Everything needs to be done in moderation.

Sad thing is that this is how people see the players of WoW... who would wait to take his wife to finish a raid. I wonder if the other raiders even knew this was happening? I bet if they did, they would have kicked him if he didn't leave. There are just certain things that take priority over WoW... family for one. If it was my kid, I would tell the group and I'd bet they'd be completely understanding. (At least I'd hope so, otherwise I'd question why I was with the group in the first place.) Also doesn't hurt to tell them up front that your wife is 9 months pregnant.

And jschild3, that's why I get my news on Yahoo (if I bother) or from The Daily Show! lol.

I totally agree that people think WoW players are like that- some are. Some people who play poker are gambling addicts. Some people that like Whoppers are morbidly obese. The fact is that people mostly hear (partly do to the bias in media, but also to the fact that people often choose to hear what they want) about the "bad"/"negative" cases of these things.

Everything is on a continuum, and the news, and people outside of the topic choose to focus on one side or the other, rather than the numerous degrees upon that continuum.

I still like that their last name is practically Murloc.

HA! A guy that can't spell complaining about someone using caps. Priceless!

Daily Show FTW! What's funny is that their audience is among the most informed about political affairs. Too bad that the other news networks focus so much on trivial stuff (what is Britney Spears doing today?) that they neglect the serious stuff. Even when they do, they just repeat what they've heard and don't bother to question the sides and report the relavent truth's (How to save Social Security? Make Congress stop spending the interest that is supposed to pay for later generations and the problem is forever solved).

End Rant :)

Funny stuff. FYI, going into "labor" can last for a great many hours lol. My experience was panic followed closely by a frantic rush to the hospital --- where we were told to go home (10 minutes away) and come back when the contractions had sped up. SEVEN HOURS LATER we went back and the doctors finally induced the contractions with some drug.

Provided that they know more about child birth than most of the "OMFG THAT VILLAIN!" posters, I totally understand them waiting. lol

Hoji.

Considering that literally thousands of things that can happen, you go straight to the hospital. Yes it can take 7 hours. My wife's (see I actually know what I'm talking about) took nearly 20 hours, with my son's neck being choked by his cord and them having to rush to do a C-section instead of having it naturally like she wanted.

My sister's labor lasted 1 hour and she barely made it to the hospital and suffered tearing due to the quick labor.

So before you think every single labor is exactly like yours, you might want to check that. If the doctor sends you home, great. YOU do not make that decision yourself however. You are not medically trained.

Actually, I'm more in agreement with Hojiman on this. When my wife went into labor it was monday 23h00. My son was born wednesday 15h00. That's 40 hours of labor. Thank god my wife hates hospitals and circumstances permitted us to deliver the baby at our home. Did I fire up wow during those 2 days of waiting and making my wife as comfortable as possible? Yep (and I still get to hear it every now and then when she needs an argument).

So there is a big difference between:
- Labor started, but we're not going anywhere anytime soon. Take 5 minutes to go "OMG!" but no need to panic.
and
- Your firstborn is coming to the world within the next 20 minutes !!! Drop whatever that you're doing and get over here!

My first, I gave birth in 7 hours and my second was 2, but it doesn’t matter how long it takes, what’s important for both mother and baby is that they are in a safe and controlled environment asap. My second was born with complications and time can be so precious.
If a father prefers to play a game rather than take his wife to hospital, then he cannot possibly be responsible enough to be having children, imo.

My wife and I play. We even have my brother-in-law playing (designated healer for my tank :P ) Having 4 kids going out is almost impossible to afford as it is. Gives us something to do together.

My oldest has an account but he just got it this summer and he will go back on lockdown when school starts.

We cook for the kids, went out to the pool for god knows way to long and our house is the video game house!

You would be surprised to see how many houses WoW turns into a family event.

Now thats cool. I've let my son play a bit, but he's really too young for it. When he gets a bit older, I figure I will ruin him :P

He can't just game though - we hike regularly and he does all the YMCA sports, trying to get him well rounded.

With the cost of gas so high people are traveling less and their time spent on vacations is more of a "staycation" as my friend termed....in that they're off from work but staying at home.

The fact that a family like the Murdocks do that (and I know several in game as well) is awesome and it's nice to see the game bringing together people like that. It has always been the social aspect of the game that has kept me playing and will continue to be. With 10 million plus people there will be exceptions to the norm as always, like the kidnapping of that girl, but you don't let it get to you.
