Spielberg + WoW = True?

17th May 2008 03:08 PM GMT | Leord | 10 comments

There are a lot of celebrities playing WoW, (Brandon Routh from Superman for one), and in an PopSci interview with Spielberg, he does confess to been playing some WoW (the use of the word "Warcraft" probably means that, one would guess).

As Warcraft fans, we naturally hope for some really talented director to take the steering wheel of the unnamed Warcraft movie, and if Spielberg has some experience with the game, that could bode well. Seeing as Legendary Pictures have quite a good track record, we hope that our high expectations will be met.

Still, it's strange that we've heard so little about this project since BlizzCon, as many other "big" movies often have a lot more press! Since the movie still is slated for 2009, we are getting a bit concerned. In the meanwhile, keep an eye out for WorldofWar.net coverage from WWI 2008 (Paris, in late June), BlizzCon 2008 (Irvine, October), and other surprise events for possible WoW movie news.

Thanks MedievalDragon for the tip.

We haven't seen too many? Have we seen one?

What is sad is that its so simple. Don't make the game into a movie. Keep the spirit of the game, the story and characters, without doing the silly stuff. Honor the source material but don't be a slave to it and don't ridicule it.

It's the difference between Batman and Robin and Batman Begins.

"We haven't seen too many? Have we seen one?"

I personally loved 'Silent Hill', I think that was a really great movie. Of course, it also helps that the game had a great story, something 'Doom' and 'Super Mario Brothers' don't have.

I also liked 'Tomb Raider'. I thought it was a fun popcorn/adventure flick. TR2 was awful, but #1 was ok :)

dooom and hitman were both last year. and i didnt dare to watch either of them, to be honest, i just didnt dare to. i fear they are terrible :)

Well Doom has nothing to do with Doom and Hitman was panned by everyone.

TR was......"ok" at best, just way too over the top and cartoony. Also never have cared for super advanced technology made by people who use stone to make stuff. Nothing was explained, just a decent action movie with very little plot.

Never playing Silent Hill, I cannot comment on the game but the movie....there was no real story. Just wierd scene after wierd scene (not always a bad thing) with a thread of plot holding them together.

The best game movie in my mind was probably Mortal Combat. Horribly cheesy but kept the spirit of the game and characters and didn't take itself too seriously. Worst is probably Street Fighter or Mario Brothers (which I've never even tried to watch, and god willing, will never have to.)

Sounds like they did a faithful translation then, because that's my impression of this series by way of the various demos I've tried of it.

Do hope you mean the first Mortal Kombat movie, which was fun. The latter two were tripe though. Street Fighter was amusing enough, Kylie as Cammy worked for some reason.

Side note: Commercially, the Resident Evil movies did fairly well, least from what I've gathered. I have seen comments about it straying rather far from the source material though.

Additional side note: Doesn't help that Uwe Boll has done a number of game to movie translations, and this guy makes Ed Wood look like Steven Spielberg.

God help us that uwe boll was scorned by Blizzard on this one =P

Well, for me the best game -> movie translations so far are indeed
1. Resident Evil (both movies and I expect the upcoming/(released??) third one to be equally good
2. Tomb Raider
3. ???

It's a darn pity what has been done to Doom... No Demons?? Genetics??

Probably just to make it a lower rating on it. Which is silly in on itself. The main point is that cultist things and demons in the US is taken really bad. Old Warcraft games used to have pentagrams in them when it came to dark magic, but now they have retconed it, so there are no pentagrams. Dark magic are now never called anything similar to "devil" or "satanic" or any similar references (well, I'm pretty sure the word satanic was never used, but still).
